Re: How can Clark be premier when she lost her own seat? Column, June 22

When the majority of voters in B.C. elected a government on the basis of a fear of one party rather than respect and trust of another, they not only put in place a group guided by a suspect ethical compass, but enabled a situation in which someone who is not elected is allowed to control government policy and business and make unilateral decisions such as the one to award salary raises to government workers.

Surely this situation illuminates a fault in the parliamentary system that needs to be repaired. It also raises two important questions: should unelected Christy Clark get paid a salary out of government funds; and what will, and should transpire, should she also lose the byelection?

Irrespective of political orientation, all citizens should demand that only persons duly elected to public office should be afforded the right to influence or implement policies that affect our lives in so many important ways. Simple ethics and a respect for the basic principles of democracy dictate that it would be appropriate for Clark to step back until due process is complete and the democratic process is more properly served.
